If you are using an Instant Messenger like gaim or Trillian, you may get the following message from Microsoft:
.NET Messenger Service Staff: You are running a version of messenger that requires an immediate security update. Please visit http://messenger.msn.com/Help/Upgrades.aspx to complete the update.
This happened to me over the last two days. Looks like things are still working but sometime in October, supposedly, Microsoft will change their IM "protocol" so the other IM will not work.

Re: MS Upgrade messages sent to non-MS IM's
I really hope they don't. It will be a PITA for anyone using non-MS operating systems. I have a reasonably featured BeOS client, but if they lock me out, I'll go with a non-MS solution.hyperspace wrote:Looks like things are still working but sometime in October, supposedly, Microsoft will change their IM "protocol" so the other IM will not work.
I just don't think this makes sense for anyone, including MS.
MS are greedy bastards.. they want people to use THEIR crap... and noone elses >:|
leave it to the guru's to make another trillian to use the new "protocol"

That's what AOL used to do, and there was a game of cat and mouse as AOL changed the protocol, Trillian "fixed" their software, AOL changed the protocol............

Look at it from their perspective - they provide this service for free. The only way they make money is hits generated from downloads of their client, while trillian is sold at profit. In that way is it really wrong of them to want you to use their client for their protocol?
And it does make it more secure, in some respects, provided you trust MS...

The way they *should* make money is by charging for their client and making a better product than their rivals do.
But, typically, MS do not want to compete.
