It stores the firmware for the piece of hardware it was on. Think of it as the motherboard BIOS, only it's for that piece of hardware.

It is not what I thought it was. A POST diagnostics PCI card.

Can you post the information that you see on the large black IC chip? Or, give us a close-up picture of that IC chip? I couldn't tell you if that card would "help" the mainboard until I know what it is.

Tell us the FCC ID number on the board and it'll be easy to identify.

The card is a no-name ATA-100 controller with a CMD649 chipset on there (made by Silicon Image). I have one the same (mine is made by STLabs) in my BP6 and have had no problems with it under both Windows XP and Linux (Slackware 9.0). You can find out about the chipset here (download new drivers, grab whitepapers, etc):
http://www.cmd.com/products/sii0649.asp

Hope that helps.

Boy am I glad BP6.com is back up. There's nothing quite like posting inane chatter to newsgroups.
Still kicking along with the Abit BP6 :-)

Thanx for clearing this up, LoopHole! Now, that I look a little more closely at the pix, you can see the two IDE connections. DOH!
