Pentalpha HSF

Post by tomatoeboy »

Has anyone tried or heard anything about these things? They seem to be scatered liberally round the web and are quite cheap. I wanted to know if this is because they're rubbish. I was looking at some of the APSK-0166 ones to go on my BP6.

I got two Pentalpha Heatsinks (but I think they´re called something like APSK 159) on my BP6. The Heatsinks are very nice, because they are 5x5 cm at the bottom and 6x6 cm at the top, so they use the small space available very efficiently. The downside is that the fans are noisy (only ok at 7V for me). But I replaced them with two old 5cm Papsts. At 7V. The CPUs _do_ get a little hot these days (55 Degrees Celsius according to BP6FSB, 2.0V CPU Core, 366@523 Mhz).

Cheers Wolfram, were the temps much lower with the supplied fans? When I clock my 433's to 533 I have to bump the core to 2.2V to be even slightly stable & that has taken my temps up to 55ºC, although it has been really hot here the last few days when I hit those temps.

What I want to know is whether it worth bothering as I want to try & bring my temps down. What do you think?

Well, the temps _were_ significantly lower with the original 6cm-fans, they are (IIRC) _at_least_ 5°C lower with the 5cm-Papsts @12V.

I think it depends on

1. how large your current heatsinks are. I had one of the Papsts on a small (50x50x25mm) heatsink before, and it was much hotter than now (impossible to run the fan at 7V). These Pentalpha sinks are 50x50 at the bottom, 60x60 at the top & about 45mm (?) high.

2. how much you care about noise. The 6cm fans were not unbearably loud, but rather noisy compared to the Papsts.

Just saw that you use 433´s... I don´t think it´s worth overclocking them to 533 (82 FSB, right?). This means 41 Mhz PCI clock- there are quite many components that don´t like such a high PCI clock, I once owned an IBM DHEA 38451 (8GB), attached to an Abit BH6 and got _massive_ data corruption when I overclocked my Cel 433 to 488 (83 FSB, 41,5 PCI). Also got a Geforce 3 that locks up when the AGP bus is clocked above the standard 66 Mhz. So better beware...
