Bp6 Will Not Post! Help!!!

Post by hajjiKoKo »

I just bought a BP6 off ebay and it wad advertised as "in working condition".
I had two celeron 500's (PPGA) lying around and figured this would be a good match. The board is v1.0 and I dunno what bios version is on it (RU?).

NOW, when i hook it up with the following components:
256mb pc133 (Centurion???)
120 GB hdd (WD Caviar, 8MB Cache)
235 W Power supply (Tiger?, came with a Micron PII system)
52x LG cd-rom drive
4MB Viper 330 (have also tried GeForce 2 MX400 64 DDR)
1x 500mhz celeron (left and right, both have been tried)
and hit the power button:
nothing starts, not even fans spining.

THEN when i try to reset the cmos jumper, as soon as i pull it out the fans starts running but no beeps (this is really, really weird).

Upon inspection the cmos battery holster is broken (shouldn't affect though right?) but the capacitors are neither bulged or leaking.
I used a can of compressd air to clean all off dust and tried again...
NO luck.

I would love ot know if i'm messing up or if the board is DOA and if it would be wise to RMA it..
Thanks

PS I have also tried to swap out the power supply with a 500w ultra one from my current pc and no luck.

Make sure your PSU is off before you mess with those jumpers. You could damage the board. If you were using metal tweezers, you might have hit one of the pairs of power on jumpers (the wake on lan or something is right there, this happened to me once when I forgot to flip the switch on the PSU). Unplug it if necessary.

NO luck.
Your caps could be bad without showing any visible signs. Mine blew out on me without ever showing visible symptoms.

If you know your power supply is good, try one CPU in the socket next to the RAM. One stick of RAM in DIMM1 (the socket closest to the CPU). Video card and no hard drives or CDROMs or any other PCI cards. Make sure the Clear CMOS jumper is on pins 1-2. If this works, try adding other components one at a time.

phaedrus is right now about the capacitors. They could be bad and everything looks fine. How do the induction coils look?

Thank You ALL,
I tried fiddling around with it but still no hope.
I am afraid the board is damaged.
Now would abit RMA accept it?
I bought it on an ebay auction.
I love this board and I was wondering if it was worht sending it to
abit RMA since these board are becoming harder and harder to find...
Thanks A LOT,

yeh, start your own topic.
there's planty of other fan topics you could have tacked on to....

the evercool cud-725ca fits, but it might be a noisyier....
but the evercool has three hole connectors to the cpu zif socket. the hsc-v62 has the std single connector.

Ain't Dave_Rave, Great !

I truely love it! But, that's just me.

hajjiKoKo,

You may want to consider replacing the capacitors, locally. Yourself, friend, repair shop...

well the new bp6 has metal levers for the zif sockets. Is one better than the other? well everything is up and running, I am very happy but the 325 watt power supply is not enough so i got a nice Ultra 500 watt one and all seems to be flawlwess (I have a wireless pci card, 120gb caviar, 5.1 card, Nvidia Vanta, blower, firewire card).

What i found to be very tricky is the cmos jumper. If I am right it goes like this:
If you place the board so that the cpu sockets are at the top.
the cmos jumper is positioned vertically and the pins are arranged
3-2-1 from top to bottom right?
Because when i read the manual its confusing and at first it got me thinking that it is 1-2-3 from top.

Anyways the new bp6 came with that setup for the jumper and worked fine so I believe that is the normal posiotn and not the reset.

With the mainboard orientated so the processors are at the top, PIN 1 of the CCMOS CMOS Discharge switch is at the bottom.

How is the "re-cap" going?

I had trouble with the caps that were on large ground traces when I did mine. Eventually I used the RMA process. For a while Abit was out of replacement boards but in the end they came through. Hyperspace and I both sent boards in about the same time just when the shortage started but we got them back in time.

David

BTW what does that first line in your sig mean?
There are *almost* no bad BP6s. There are mostly bad caps.

No BP6s remaining

Side note: Abit might not accept for RMA a motherboard without a copy of your original receipt. Your eBay-bought board probably didn't come with a copy of the receipt and if it did, it might even be in someone else's name. When you request the RMA at their website, there's a checkbox where they ask you if you have the receipt. In my case, I did, and I included it in the box as requested when I returned my board with their postage-paid UPS label.

EC10 cap is black and smaller than the others nearby. Sticker on ISA slot says "V1.0".
