Personally I've never liked EAC that much, and only use it when I run in to problems. CDeX comes with the latest version of LAME and OggEnc, and does all the naming and cddb lookup (freedb).

The setting to use these days is --alt-preset standard, which is VBR (there's no reason to use VBR and no reason not to use LAME). As for hyperspace's question, an -alt-preset standard MP3 is almost indistinguishable from the CD original in terms of wave structure, let alone to the human ear. The Hy...

Well as an indicator I've just upgraded from a dual 533 (no oc) celeron system on my bp6 (which is now becoming a server) to an athlon XP2200+. In general desktop work (outlook, openoffice writer, opera, winamp2/foobar, mirc open) I've noticed no huge performance increase once the apps are running, ...

Well if you fly to london, I'll be happy to demonstrate, quite a fee for something that costs about $1 to do yourself :P The only problem is the smell is quite repulsive, especially in a badly ventilated small lab. The only trouble is its very much hit and miss, the lower value electrolytic caps (ar...

IIRC the colourings of caps are representative of tollerence and (maybe?) voltage rating, BUT it depends on the manufacturer. I have a feeling the green/gold ones are somewhat higher quality than the more common blue/black ones (they look it to me). As said previously the most common sign of aging i...

The trick to getting ACPI enabled in install is to install the HPT366 drivers at the start of the win XP/2k setup (where it says "Press F6 if you want to install 3rd party SCSI/RAID drivers" or somesuch). This will then lead to it installing as an ACPI setup (if the BIOS is set up properly). As for ...

I've never had a big problem with the HPT366 controllers. The only trick I've found is for ACPI on win2k/xp is installing the drivers right at the start of the install from CD (press F6 to install drivers bit). Odd that some people have such trouble and some not. Interestingly the primary UDMA33 cha...

I'm not sure about this ram problem, but I can reccomend [link=http://www.crucial.com]Crucial[/link] for buying RAM - I've never had a problem and they have a click through system that matches the ram to your motherboard to ensure compatability. For the record, 128*1024 (ie 128MB in KB) is 131027, w...
