The 1085 is still there. I, personally, would have removed it (now that I think of it, LM317's are cheap, I might just redo the job). My Vtt voltage still fluctuates +/-10%, but it hasn't been affecting stability. I don't know that I've ever been able to find documentation on it [the 1085]. I went b...

Sure thing. With pictures even! Check out my gallery , I've got pretty clear shots of all the mods I've done. So far, I've done the Neo 370S mod (cut the trace on the adaptor, on wire on the mobo) and epoxied the wire down. The previous owner put an LM317 in for Q6. To stabilize the board with the P...

This is linked to in the article, but here is a good picture of what I'm talking about. To get the PIII Neo mod going, you have to add the wires in the picture, and there's no good place to make a mechanical connection. Most of the work I do in the lab is point to point turret construction. We do lo...

YOU DA MAN, JEFF! Thanks, glad I could help. I checked the settings, and they were all at "none". I changed them all to "auto", and was able to boot from the dvd. Unfortunately, I've got something else squirrely going on, because it shows my cdrom as the "primary master" and I'm also getting a "sla...

Windows should be able to read the DVD just fine (the filesystems for data DVDs and CDs are standardized, and a Linux just uses those filesystems as does Windows and MacOS). Definitely check the disk on another machine to make sure it boots. Although, if you got it from a Fedora book, I would bet it...

Hey guys. I had a thought. I'm an electronics technician in a physics lab at the UW (this is why I got the mod going in a weekend, experience and access to the right tools). Anyway, I keep worrying about the wires on the back of the sockets for the Neo 370S mod--solder is bad for making mechanical c...

You want the Neo 370S, this is the original socket 370 adaptors. The Neo 370S translates a PPGA socket on the mobo into an FCPGA1 socket. The others you mention go from FCPGA1 on the motherboard to FCPGA2 (so you can put Tualatine CPU into a mobo designed for a Coppermine CPU, where what you're tryi...

Doom3! w00t! (kinda, read on) I had to satisfy myself that my computer couldn't run Doom3, so I downloaded the demo. Well, it plays and it doesn't. It's a little bit jerky, but when there isn't much going on, it's pretty good. When things pick up, it's still playable (sorry, I didn't check fps). So ...

Here's another interesting one that I stumbled on: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6746014113&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT Looks like it's been modded to use PIIIs, and comes with 2 PIII 700s. I sent him a couple questions (he didn't know it had to be modded to work with PIIIs), a...

Aw hell yeah. I'm excited. I've got a subscription, so my disks will be in the first shipment. The big upgrade I'm looking forward to is the Xorg 6.8.1 Xserver. It supports true transparency, among many other things. This allows one to get the MacOSX style transparent terminal emulators. The default...

Excellent Stability Test

Linux offers an excellent hardware stability test. If you've modded your mobo (say, OC'd your celerons something high or slapped some PIIIs in there) and you want to know if you've got hardware instabilities to work out, this is it. It's really simple. Compile the Linux kernel. It's that simple. It ...

For everyone state side, 70degC is 158degF, which is about the minimum temperature to which restaraunts are required to cook ground beef.

The Linux kernel has been SMP capable for a long time--since the 2.0.x kernels. 2.0.0 was released in 1996. I started running Linux with the 2.0.35 (1998) kernel. IIRC, the thread architecture was completely redone for 2.4.x, and now uses a much more awesome multithreading scheme. Basically, the ker...

The answer is probably. I'm currently running dual PIII 866MHz processors, however, they are underclocked to 650MHz (100MHz FSB instead of 133MHz). My board currently has the Q6 mod (with an LM317T) , with EC10 replaced with a 1500MFD capacitor (suggested in Yoichiro's PIII mod guide . I'm using two...

I've had good luck with Q3A SMP under Linux. Most programs under Linux are not actually multithreaded, but the OS is layered enough that it's still a smoother ride with SMP (ie, the kernel can run the XServer on one proc, and graphical programs on the other, it's smart enough to optimize like that. ...

Quake 3 Arena is great on the ol' BP6. Just remember to pull down the console, enter "set r_smp 1" and then restart the game. Much better, no? Dang, a 250W PSU? And it runs the dual PIIIs? I'm impressed, I had to replace my 250W PSU to get the board to even run dual celerons @366. I would try the Q6 + EC10 mod, it did wonders for my stability. And definitely get a new PSU (I upgraded my 300W to a 400W out of paranoia, well, that and the su...

Hey all. I'm new around here. I just did the PIII mod using Neo S370s, following Yoichiro's guide . I've got a version 1.0 BP6. I cut the trace on the S370s and added the wire from AN15 to N33. The dual proc works fine. I tested her with just this mod and the board was stable to a maximum of 83MHz F...
