Why don't you connect the DVD to IDE 1 or 2 as a slave device?

NB Each IDE port can serve two IDE drives, one as master, the other as slave. The jumpers on the backs of the IDE drives need to be set for master or slave.

While perusing www.hackaday.com - a great site by the way - I came across this site, with pictures of a PC submerged in vegetable oil.

The entire computer minus the disk drives is submerged and has been running for over a year.

Some pictures I took today of my "7V Trick" adaptor. As I said earlier, I butchered an old pass-through cable to make it. What sort of cooling do you have on the northbridge chip?

Have you tried shuffling the conflicting cards into other slots? NICs in particular are known not to like sharing resources.
