Intel To Discontinue Pentium II

Post by InactiveX »

Intel is to discontinue the Pentium II, of which our beloved Celeron is a variant.

I was astonished to read that the chips are still being sold. A fine testament to a great CPU.

All I can say is WOW.

Why would anyone pay Intel$ price for something they can get free at the dump or for shipping costs on Ebay?

BTW.
I got a pair of P-II/350s recently. I put them on a P-III board and OCed them to 465. All worked great. I kinda wish I could get a free dual slot-1 board now.
Well, maybe not.
There are *almost* no bad BP6s. There are mostly bad caps.

No BP6s remaining

The reason why Intel is still making them (and why they will still be on sale until 2006) is because of embedded applications and not desktop computers.

Embedded applications are most of the time very dependent on batteries or very "tight" power sources. Today's CPU's are using a fast clock which means that they draw more current which is bad. Things like SSE and faster FSB's don't usually mean much to embedded apps.
