Building the team a seti farm.

Post by HAL6000 »

So there has been talk of building some seti farms and I figured I would stick there here so we could keep track of it.

For this to work we will need the following.

People willing to donate space and electricity to running the farm(s).

People willing to donate CPU's, motherboards, ram, power supplies, video cards, network cards, hard drives or floppy drives, network cables, hubs, and asorted other bits that may be needed.

It would probably be better if the people who are donating space and electricity cordnated with the people donating stuff via the message board so no one gets confused.

I could/do have the following crunching for the team :-

BP6 with 2 x 500 Celeron

D6VAA with 2 x 500 P3 (this board recently died and I am looking for a replacement)

VP6 with 2 x 700 P3 (this board works but is unstable due to needing the caps changing)

Tyan Board with 2 x 2.4Ghz 533 HT P4 Xeons

As you can see I need to do some work to two of the machines.

Yeah its doing well :)

Only built it up two days ago.

Its taking about 4 hours per unit, but every 4 hours it does 4 which = 1 per hour.

ok update

i'v now got the wood and screws and the power tools (drool) to build the seti stack

im going to try and slowly pick up a few ECS k7s5a pro v5.0 mobo's and some durons (athlon xp 2400's if they are cheap enough) to add to the stack

i've got a k62350 mobo and cpu that i can use to add to the stack.. not much but it'll help

i'll get the $25 worth of caps to replace the leaking ones as soon as i can

im going to get a programmer friend of mine to help me create a server (which will probably be the SCSI server BP6 i have now) and some software to run each mobo to run cmd line's andsuch

what i will need

any old video cards (anything that works) wheter it be 1mb tridents or whatever, i have an old 2mb trident and my old ATI rage pro pci video card i can use atm

floppy drives

ATX power supplies as little as 100-200 watt

maybe a few NIC's

some 80mm case fans

and some heatsinks+fans (any that will fit s370 or socket a will do fine)

now..

If you are interested there are some quick pictures I took of the system as it is at the moment.
http://david.bp6.com/pics/xeon/

I’m planing on putting it in a case with better ventilation as it gets fairly hot in that case with the side on.

There is also pictures of the old motherboards the dead D6VAA and a working but unstable VP6.

I actually got a job with Oki Data so I may actually be building a rack of my own in a few months but until then I will send you crap I have around here.

Kuun,

Sorry bout the delay but the stuff ships out today UPS ground. I'll email you the tracking number.

It's 4 PCI video cards, 2 floppy's, 3 old (but working) IDE drives, a handful of IDE & Floppy cables, and 3 NIC's. The NIC's are 10baseT ISA but you should be able to use them if they're not too tall for your rack.

Hope this helps.

I suggest the BP6.Com Seti Farm run under its own SETI account so that we can keep track of it.

"BP6.Com SETI Machine" maybe?
