There is no spoon, and no >256 MB bug with the Kyro II

Post by Wolfram »

I had checked out a Kyro II board (Videologic Vivid!XS) for some days. I have 512 MB RAM on my BP6, so I expected the ">256MB bug" to show up (distorted... or was it flickering? textures on Kyro board in systems with >256MB memory).

But everything was OK: Q3A, RTCW, NFS5/6, UT/UT2003

When I checked out the forum at www.mitrax.de (German Kyro site) I noticed the moderators there also couldn´t confirm the existence of this bug. Some people have reported it, but it can´t be reproduced by others with same or similar setups.

BTW: I took the Kyro out and put my G400 back in because the CPU bottleneck still made UT2003 and NFS6 unplayable. But for those looking for a new video card, with the current prices (35$ here in Germany, incl. shipping!) it´s still attractive for those stuck with older cards. Also noticed that some graphics glitches (ie in NFS5) that I had noticed when I first tried a Kyro on another system a year ago, were gone now with new drivers. 2D quality was also very good (maybe a tad softer than my G400, but not blurred)

Yes, the Kyro2 is slow today. But my Duron 900 / 512 MB SDRAM / Geforce 2 MX runs UT2003 much better (on lower details + in 16bit). And the GF2MX is slower in UT2003 than the Kyro2.
