If you read a few of the threads here, you will come to realize that your storage upgrade budget plan needs to include a Promise/Maxtor ATA 100/133 PCI controller ($25-35).

Unless you are interested in a one-way ticket to hard drive HELL, by all means DO NOT connect these drives to the HPT366. They will at best be misdetected at the BIOS level, run very slowly, and if you can get an OS installed - they will be scrambled & trashed in short order.

Re: maximum hd size?

looks like my trusty 40gb drive is dying a slow death, so I was thinking
of installing a 120gb samsung drive (don't care about speed too much,
just need the space).

The system runs Linux and boots off a SCSI disk.

Is there a maximum HD size for the non-hpt366 ide controller or will
it detect the 120gb drive correctly?

cheers & thanks in advance,

uwe
On paper the drive will detect up to and over 120gig HDs.
