HPT controller safe?

Post by clsmith »

OK, I've been reading around the board for a while now and the General concensus is to nix the HPT controller when using Win2K. Since my BP-6 (Dual 533 Cel's, RU BIOS w/HPT 1.28 ) is running Win2K using the 1.25 driver I'm starting to get a little worried about my disk. Is the HPT safe at any level?

My next question is about Linux. Is the controller any safer for disks running Linux? Are certain BIOS level's better for that OS?

I already have 4 IDE devices taking up all the available IDE slots so I'd like to keep the disks on the controller (if safe to do so.) I'd Like to avoid spending for a Promise controller if possible too.

Any help would be appreciated.

Apparently confidence is low regardless of OS & Firmware/driver level. :?

well... I think your disks are equal, cause they are the same model if you are running in mirror...

Besides... didn't you hear that IBM Deskstars had some problems?

As I recall, Even IBM itself told that they are not ment for running 24hours a day, they are ment only not more than 8 hours per day... maybe I am wrong, but I think it runs down to the hardware....
