Need Definitive Answer about WD Raptors, HPT & Promise S

Post by Northstar55 »

I am planning on purchasing 2 Western Digital 10,000 rpm 74 GB SATA hard drives and want to run them off a Promise SATA card.

What are the chance this setup will work if I do the following in this order:

1) Install Promise card drivers in XP Pro

2) Flash BIOS to version with no HPT

3) Set BIOS boot sequence to EXT, C,A and have EXT=SCSI

4) Hook up drives to card with SATA cables

5) Reboot to XP Pro.

How likely will 5) happen do you think, or is there another step I need to consider here. Seems to me that I wouldn't have to reinstall XP since I installed the necessary drivers in Step 1). With other Promise cards, they advise to install the drivers in XP before installing the card so that XP picks them up on the reboot.

you don't necesarry need to boot bios without HPT - windows will recognize it anyway, so you will need to disable HPT in hardawe settigns anyway....

everything else is OK, but to save you time... Just hook the drives directly to your promise card without installing drivers first - it is just not a necessary step....
