after 2 weeks of downtime..

my bp6 is finally coming back online

What is the point of investing fresh new time in tired old surplus drves? If those clunkers are as old as they look, I hope they came free.
I just got a new pair of Maxtor 80GB/7200/8MB drives for just over $50 Ea. - now they may not keep up with SCSI in a loaded multi-user/tasking senario, but they will likely be working for another 2-4years. When drive sizes get this big, the work it takes to fill them up starts to represent much greater value than the H/W itself. Old stuff can't cut it anymore.

well

i like SCSI

and to have knowledge on how to use setup and operate true scsi devices proves to be beneficial

plus... i got them because it was 92GB for $30

i use them for network storage.. i don't run a server that requires hard processing or heavy loads... it's merely a network storage unit (SAN)

No offence but I wouldnt expect a maxtor drive to be working in two years time.
The 7200 drives have a habit of failing.
A friend of mine lost I think it was four in one month.
My brother bought a 120gb 7200 drive and it lasted less than six months.

yes

i have a SCSI drive (1 gig) that was made in the early 90's

it's so old.. IBM made it

i could barely find any kinda info on it to install it on 98 so 98 would see it

it's 997MB

i got 2 of em... one died from a bus failure (the bus sent 12V at about 3 amps down the 5v line of the SCSI bus) and lost one due to the "click of death" and it still worked some...

i swapped the bad parts (one had good guts and one had good electrical) and it's still ticking away as we speak

Well, kuun, the price was good enough. I agree that the odds for decent quality in a drive are much better with SCSI - hopefully by at least the same factor as the higher price. Perhaps I should consider going with a 2+2 striped/mirrored RAID array if all the Maxtor stories art true.
Only cost me $110 for the 2nd pair at least.
Still, I like their QUIET/COOL running fluid dynamic bearings.
Used to love IBM until they shipped a ton of defective drives and denied it.

yeah.. i got an ibm 30 gig

it died within 3 months and i was denied an RMA

i will never buy ibm drives ever again

but did your friend buy the drives from the same batch? Perhaps a bad batch?

The reason I ask is that I've used many brands of HDDs over the years and have found Maxtor to be one of the more reliable.

Having built & supported PC systems for nearly 15 years now, it is interesting to note how the fortunes & reputations of the various drive manufacturers has changed over time. I see lowest % fails on Maxtor recently.

First it was Seagate all alone at the top. WD, Maxtor, Micropolis trying to get some market share. Maxtor once shipped bricks instead of drives to make it look to investors like they had met some year end goals. They were first to ship 3.5" 1" high 40MEG drives in serious quantity and things took off for them after that.
Quantum, Fujitsu, Samsung always remained 2nd tier dog crap brands
Seagate went SCSI & lost interest in IDE until recently.
WD converted from controllers to IDE HDs fast, still weak in SCSI
IBM kept making better heads & increasing bit density, then dropped out
Hitachi carries on the IBM business - mostly big iron & notebooks
Toshiba dominates the 2.5" notebook market.
IBM thinks nanotech is the storage for the futire - not magnetic,

That could explain it

I have to agree their reputation is no where near as bad as IBM's, but I have herd bad stories about them...
But hey each to their own, its the same with cars, some poeple prefer some makes while others like a different make.

I just RMAed my Radeon 9700 Pro because the memory was shot; it happens.
