What do you use your BP6 for?

Post by merker19 »

I've been reading thru the threads in this particular section of the forum and I see a lot of old video cards being mentioned. Some have mentioned the latest and greatest like the ATI Radeon 9000, but for the most part I hear TNT or Voodoo being batted around. I have no problem with this... but it just makes me wonder what most of you fellow BP6'ers use your system for... I, myself, use it for surfing the web, email, newsgroups, word processing, and other things... unfortunately, I have a Voodoo 5500 and it doesn't seem to muster the fps I need to play one of my favorite games, Counter-Strike... I even tried a Geforce 4 MX440 64MB which didn't have the guns to raise the fps very much... so it makes me wonder, what you guys are using and what you use your system for.... is there a good video card out there that has the horsepower to power todays modern games using an outdated processor??? Or is the BP6 only good for surfing the web and running SETI?
Thx for the input! :D

Not really. Here are some CPU scaling benchmarks for UT2003 and at the bottom of this page is a CPU scaling chart for the Radeon 9700 Pro.

You see that the fps drop faster as you get closer down to 800 Mhz. With an Athlon XP. Now with a 500/600 Mhz Celeron with a lower per-Mhz-performance I think you won´t get decent framerates. At least in single player games like UT2003 botmatch because of the higher CPU load. In multiplayer it may be ok.

But a R9700 Pro will be _so much_ slower in a BP6 than in a modern system, it´s just a waste of horsepower, IMO. Better get a second- gaming- system and use the BP6 for what it´s good for: Work.

SETI = search for extratressials intelligence, you basically do FFT on radio packets and search for alian blips
