boot from atapi cdrom: failure

Post by bp6matus »

hi folks,
i recently flashed my bios and then tried to install a new OS but i keep getting the error 'boot from atapi cdrom: failure', even though the cdrom is bootable and the cdrom is eltorito. i've tired other roms and other drives and the same thing happens each time.

any thoughts as to what this might be indicative of? yes, cdrom is set first in the bios'

thannks in advance !!

it is not necesary for cdrom to be the first. it just has to be before any HDD... :)

you did not mention where you did connected it... do not do on HPT666...

and what exactly do you mean "eltorito"???? is that a trademark.... or it means it funcions OK?...

be more clear and specific

the cdrom is connected to ide 2 as the master.

el torrito is the standard for 'bootable' cdroms, which means that you can boot from it.... older cdroms sometimes are not el torrito, hence not bootable.

the bios settings for boot sequence are cdrom/c/a...so cdrom is before c.

i can however set the machine to boot from floppy first and it works, but i can't get it to boot from cd to save my life.....it's starting to feel like a hardware problem...possibly the mother board is bad. i have't had much success searching the net with solutions to 'boot from atapi cdrom: failure'

any ideas from the gallery?

Try connecting it to IDE1. That way you can eliminate a hardware fault on IDE2. Also, it sounds stupid, but check that your onboard IDE controllers are actually enabled in the BIOS (onboard peripherals menu). Sometimes flashes reset little details like these. :) Make sure that the setting is "auto" as well, for the CD-ROM, in the default BIOS settings menu. You didn't mention if you can actually read a CD-ROM once you boot from floppy - are you able to?

1. Replace the cable that you got running to the CD ROM.

2. Place the CD ROM on another IDE channel (not the HPT366 since they were not made for CD ROMs)

3. Can it be specific to your CD? I have had that happen to me. Try booting from another CD if you have one lying around. If you got broadband, do yourself a favor and download Knoppix, the CD ROM based Linux distro!

The message "boot from atapi cdrom: failure" is a general fault message and there could be many different reasons for this to show up. That is why you don't find anything when you google around. My dollar goes on number 1 above...
