BeOS Developers Edition. Please help!..

Post by BCN »

I have downloaded the developers edition, but I just do not have any idea how to get it onto CD right from under WinXP and have it bootable...

It seems they made the image for BeOS only...

I am completely newbie in BeOS, so please help me guys! :)

what kind of file system BeOS uses? can I have dual boot on the same drive with winXP?

thanks in advance!

BeOS uses its own BFS file system, but that shouldn't be your problem.

What CD authoring software are you using, and what format are you burning with, eg. Joliet, ISO9660, and all that?

You can dual boot, I like PowerBoot:

http://www.blueskyinnovations.com/pboot.html

If you are using any sort of fast ATA controller such as the one you mentioned, then you'll need a boot disk to install and a suitable driver once you're in BeOS. You can find them both here:

http://www.bebits.com/app/2625

Keep going. BeOS is really nice.

I used nero burning rom 5.9.9.0 and iso9660 level 2

I am trying to install the max edition, but I have some problems... though it seems strange, I see my cdburner on promise 133TX2 but not on normal IDe connector... I did not try switching the cables though...

anyway, the diskette image with ide replacement driver is not working as I cannot make it written on diskette, though the loader I have already...

I have just burned cd image but it seems like I have to put PS2 keyboard and mouse... I have both of them USB...

a way full of obstacles... :(

I found the problem for the moment that I could not find my CDrom connected to simple IDe controller... some freak at the factory left the jumper on slave position...

and as the modern controllers just ignored that and I just did not have any problems with using it, I did not notice that until now....

so I am undert BeOS Max now and I have lost the deskbar which was at the bottom...

how can I recover it? it is also quite slow when moving the page, but that might be the drivers for tnt card, right.... it seems like there is no acceleration....

my scroll on mouse does not work...

besides, is it possible to use windows files under BeOS?

does it see other partitions?

What happened that caused the deskbar to disappear?

This is a great Nvidia driver: http://bebits.com/app/3636 I use it with my TNT2U and it supports hardware overlay.

Your scroll wheel should work, but requires support in the software you use. Have you tried the Firefox browser? That is a supported app.

BeOS can see NTFS and FAT32 partitions, but can only write to FAT32 partitions. NTFS is read-only.

at one moment it told that it encountered an error in application (deskbar) and it will shut it down, I pressed OK and then no deskbar even after reboot, I managed only some square at the right top corner which is no way to move, which is to seem some kind of desksquare... :D

I have reinstalled it... :)

Sorry to hear about your problems. :(

USB is a bit of a no-no with BeOS. When Be stopped work on the OS, USB wasn't the ubiquitous interface it is today.

I use a PS/2 keyboard and mouse.

I guess one more reinstall and hopefully BeOS would let me choose that WinXP... :)

hehehe....

BTW, the universal scroll which I have downloaded does not work... :(

what should I install for the scroll to work on my logitech MX510? any idea?

Did it make a little square in a corner of the screen? If so, look carefully for a very small area with 3 dots in it. Click and drag, and you can turn it into a block or a bar in any screen corner or edge.

You could try this: http://www.bebits.com/app/1359 But the scroll should work by default.

Yeah, Windows always rubs out any alternative boot manager it finds. LILO, GRUB, Bootman, whatever. Anyway, here's what you do:

Open a command prompt, use "diskpart" and find out which volume BeOS is on. Type diskpart and then list volume. Once you know where BeOS is (let's say volume 2), type select volume 2. Then type active. Reboot.

Now your system will boot straight into BeOS. Then open a terminal and type bootman. This will reinstall the BeOS boot manager and let you pick your OS on next reboot as before.

Hope that helps!

(Edit) Oh, yes, I just thought of another, simpler way. Just boot off your Developer Edition CD again, and hit the spacebar quickly (before the purple icons start marching across). It'll give you a safe-mode-type menu. The first option already highlighted lets you select another boot volume, so hit enter, and change the volume from your CD to your BeOS partition. Then go back and tell it to continue booting. It'll load your installed BeOS, and then you can run bootman as before. Easy.

thanks! I will keep it in mind for the other times if I get linux installed or anything reinstalled... :)

though I have just reinstalled BeOS at that moment... hehehehe :D

About the mouse - I have it plugged along with the keyboard into the USB hub of the monitor. It might be that that the scroll does not work... I will try with PS2 the other day.

Just did not want any mouse lock-ups, like BP6 is used to...

USB support on BeOS was very shaky when development stopped. Right now, Max and DevEd are frozen at that moment. They just have extra third-party software.

Unfortunately, I don't think you'll have any luck. The scroll wheels of Logitech USB mice don't work under BeOS (I just read that you were using a Logitech - sorry). Neither does the MS Intellieye, but you can work around that by using the PS/2 adapter. However, that's known not to work for Logitech.

The only USB mouse I've tested on Be was a Logitech Wingman, which has no wheel. I use a MouseMan Wheel, which is natively PS/2, and it's wheel works fine. You could always pick up a cheap PS/2 wheel mouse for BeOS, there's nothing stopping you from having two mice plugged in in either Windows or Be.
