ZIF socket problem

This is not good...

I had just assembled one of my BP6's with dual 366@550 the other day and the system (which is recapped by the way) is really unstable. Either the video output would turn black or the computer would freeze. After checking out BIOS I saw that one of the CPU´s was getting really hot. That explains the erratic behaviour.

Anyways, I gave it a quick lookthrough today and I think I have found the problem. One of the pins on the ZIF socket that you put the clip on is broken. My clip is one of those 3 hole, wide ones so it is still hanging on the the outermost pin, but the one in the middle is broken. The heatsink is probably sitting crooked on the CPU because of it, causing it to overheat.

Anybody dealt with anything like this? Any ideas are welcome!

I think some coppermine cells come with factory clips that ONLY grab the outer tabs. Those clips are plastic, black and have a green handle that forces the pressure. Try one.

The only other suggestion I would make is mod the part of the clip that grabs the center tab on the oppisite side so both sides allow even pull on the clip.
There are *almost* no bad BP6s. There are mostly bad caps.

Thanks davd_bob, I thought about it but the clips are pretty stiff and don't allow for much playing around with. You can just stretch them far enough for them to fit on a ZIF socket. Not a millimeter more.

This is not good since it means that I have to switch boards yet again in my BP6 and then I am going to have to see if I can find a solution to this problem. Otherwise the board is useless as a dual cpu rig.

Another possible cure is to use Arctic Silver adhesive and glue the heatsink to the die.

I would worry that the weight of the HSF was too much to bear, and if I was to do this I would lie the PC horizontally to eliminate this risk.

Right now I really need that second computer so I can't muck about trying to find a cure for the broken pin. So I took my unmodified BP6 version 1.0 and what I have done is removed all larger capacitors from the board. That means that I removed 12 1000µF 10V, 12 1500µf 6.3V and the notorious EC10.

I am replacing all those suckers and then I am going to run that as my main BP6 with Celerons (366@550 at that). I am putting the PIII's on ice as well because I can't fool around with the only working one that I got. The coolers I got are not that good either for using with the P3's running on the NEO's. The other board I got is already recapped so if I can fix the problems with the ZIF sockets then I can use that board to run the PIII's.
