cooling the BX chipset - 3-wire fan???

Post by ~~~^^^mercury^^^~~~ »

i read somewhere, probably here at bp6,
if a 3-wire 486 fan (i think this includes a ground wire) is used
and plugged into 'fan3' on the bp6 mobo, then
the fan's rpms can be monitored via software.

1) any comments or thoughts?

i am just getting parts together to build my bp6, so
i don't actually know what the 'fan3' connector on the mobo is for.

2) can anyone explain?

thanks,

the three wire is for the
voltage, + and - and
the speed sensor.

the third fan header on the bp6 doesn't have the speed sensor enabled through to the sensor chip reading thingy.

it saves on one of the hdd fan voltage adaptor plugs

Hey mercury,

Please do not double post the same topic.

Thanks!

better yet...i've got a 1 fan on case, connected on the FAN1, then CPUs on FAN2 & FAN3...and i noticed a small 3 pin connector for a GPU FAN, so i'll find one small fan, and put it on the motherboard chipset...
BP6 is great! so much cooling...nice & neat!

there's a small "'"'gpu type '"'" plastic connector between pci1 and pci2
it's a WOL connector.
might be nice if a gpu fan fits and runs though

thanks, you seem to know better than some others...
so now it's a race to find a WOL fan for the chipset! the problem is that it's 35mm (ISO standard), so it's tough to find a cooler for it...post some links if u find the new ones...
:)

btw, on my motherboard it seems that the chipset temperature (or the motherboard Tmp) is about 40-45C...is that OK?! how much does yours runs?!

also, which type of the "Computer" in "Device Menager" do you have? i've just swithed boards, so i manualy put a "MPS Multiprocesor PC"...do you have the same or do you have "ACPI Multiprocesor PC"?!

change to ACPI Multiprocesor PC, be sure you have that also in BIOS.

that WOL connector is not for fan, it is for network card, for Wake On Lan, as I understand, for being able to power up your PC through the net.

Cheers!

'k.

one of Derek's links to an article.
http://www.bp6.com/board/viewtopic.php? ... et+cooling

Derek's photos of using a 486 cpu fan
http://www.bp6.com/board/album_cat.php?cat_id=12

nmot that it needs explanation, but is there an article for this too ?

my bp6's are "MPS Multiprocessor PC"

when i tried changing them to ACPI in Bios and getting them running as ACPI Multiprocessor, my kernel wouldn't sit idle anymore.
Taskinfo showed a big red bar of cpu being used by the kernel for some reason (anyone?) and the only good reason for ACPI is so the computer will shut down nicely without the prompt screen being left on to tell you so.
as mine are always on 24/7 doing seti, I decidewd to leave them as MPS. small price ....

the thing is, that the ACPI doesn't work when you try swithing to it! so last day i went through a hell to make WinXP work again...that HPT366 driver took me nuts...
:)
mine is also doing 24/7...and it's procesing UD agent in background...but it's not working on 100% with dual CPUs...

if you have an MPS machine and you manually change it to APCI, you need to re-install over in win2k, there's some internal parts that need updating. otherwise, i think it was blue screens
