Strange slowdowns

Post by Bluestreak »

Greetings to all!

Recently bought a computer from a friend with the legendary BP6 motherboard. He in turn got the BP6 as junk for something like $12 (100 Swedish kronor) and exchanged some of the capacitors.
Anyway, the problem is that some two weeks ago the bios-battery died most unexpectedly. Thus losing all the lovely overclocking being done.
Now when i try to return to the old speed 500 MHz, it seems to both calculate the speed wrong and with a fsb of 92 Mhz everything is sluggish to say the least. Not to mention unstable as hell! Any ideas?

Specification:
2 x 366 Celeron (currently @ 458 MHz with 83MHz fsb)
512 Mb Ram
Silicon Image Sil 0680 ATA/133 Controller
Maxtor 40 Gb and 80 Gb Harddrives
SoundBlaster 128
RealTek RTL8139
PointOfView GeForce 2 MX200 32Mb (AGP)
Generic 52 x CD-ROM
Windows XP and Red Hat Linux 8.0

Should be accurate if my memory serves me right...

Did you adjust the voltage settings as well?

you have to up the cpu voltage incrementally in order for the cpu to be able to acheive higher FSB speeds

my 50's @585 are running 2.1V

Do make sure you go easy with the increases. More voltage = more heat. Measure temps while you're doing it.

A hot chip can quickly end up as an ex-chip (as in ex-parrot :) ).

Increased the core voltage a couple of days ago to 2.05 V and have been running the 366s @ 500 rocksolid ever since. No slowdowns or anything. Not too warm either, both cpus @ 35 - 36 degrees (celsius).

Thanks for the help everyone.
Now, if I can just get a hold of better cooling, I'll try for 550 or even 600 MHz!
