Custom capacitor combination for a BP6

Post by Tim_K »

I'd like to get some opinions on if this is a good capacitor upgrade for a BP6. Quite a few are changed to higher value caps. I read through several capacitor upgrade articles here and at www.badcaps.net, and this is what I've come up with:

Stock caps:

12 - 6.3 volt 1500 uF
12 - 6.3 volt 1000 uF
8 - 16 volt 100 uF
1 - 25 volt 10 uF

Modified setup:

12 - 6.3 volt 1500 uF caps get changed to 6.3 volt 2200 uF

12 - 6.3 volt 1000 uF caps get changed to 6.3 volt 1500 uF

5 of the 8 16 volt 100 uF caps get upgraded to 16 volt 1500 uF. They will go on EC 10, 12, 16, 26, and 27.

The other 3 of the 8 16 volt 100 uF caps can stay stock at 16 volt 100 uF.

1 - 25 volt 10 uF cap stays at stock value.

Anyone see any obvious good or bad points in this setup? From what I've read it should work well. I've got a lot of experience in electronics work and access to the right tools for desoldering, so I'll change them myself and see how it goes.

As stated in another post, my BP6 that came back from an Abit RMA is starting to bulge the EC14 cap again. It's a green and gold Tayeh capacitor.

What are some good brand names of capacitors? Jackcon? Others?

you could do the lot....
I've not seen, on my BP6 boards, any other caps than the 1500uf ones needing replacement. so far, touch wood.

it might work with the higher values, but would it be 'better'.
my cap replacement guy (tv repair) noted that the newer caps have higher temperature ratings, which would be better, but the potential for damage with a soldering iron,.... why change it if it's working.

Actually on MY board it was the 1000s that were bad. In fact when I replaced 8 of them the system temp came into reasonable ramges and the cpus were strong up until the last 1000 went wonkers. I guess I had Taheas from before the 'incident.
There are *almost* no bad BP6s. There are mostly bad caps.

No BP6s remaining
