bios upgrage / CMOS fiasco

Post by bp6matus »

hi folks..
i pulled out an old bp6 i bought when they first came out. long story short, i went to upgrade the bios w/ the files located here, but i think i made a big boo-boo when i came time to discharging the CMOS. i didn't pull the +5v battery out. now the computer will only come on with the jumper in the 'discharge' position and the computer will not boot from a cdrom. i've tried everything to make sure it's not something else. so my question is....is there a way to recover from the cmos boo-boo or is that just it for my motherboard?

thanks in advance for your input!

you do not need to take out the batery for clearing cmos.....

ok, i was mistaken about the cmos jumper. my manual seems to have the picture of pins 1-3 reversed so it actaully is set to the normal position....

when i boot up with this new bios i get a 'highpoint technology bios' menu that say's 'press ctrl-h to enter bios' but it never works (although the first bios menu (award) does seem to work, other than the fact that i CANNOT for the life of me get it to boot from CDROM. i've checked all the jumpers and tried 3 different cdroms as well as multiple confirmed bootable cd's and i get nada....

does anyone have any ideas what might cause this or what a solution might be?

oh, and back to the clearing the cmos question... when you flash the bios, and then turn it machine off to discharge, do you just simple move the jumper to the discharge pins for a few minutes and then put it back, or do you have to re-power the machine or what?. i printed out the directions but they are a bit vague. if you could let me know the exact order of operation that would be greatly appreciated!!!

thanks in advance for you help!!!

you just move the jumper for JUST few seconds (1 is enough) :D

it is normal that you cannot enter second screen of HPT controller, if you have no drives connected.

do not connect optical drives to HPT666 - if you do not wanna lose them dead... and do not connect HDDs to it either if they are still precious to you :woot:

ok, so perhaps not all is lost...

any ideas as to why i can't get the computer to boot from a cdrom? i've selected cdrom/c/a in the bios but i never see 'press any key to boot from cdrom'.

thanks in advance!!

and you will never see cause it boot from there on default...

you would see this info on screen if you have one bootable cdrom and OS on HDD, so then eventhough OS on HDD is first, you have a choice for cdrom...
