I think you can mod the duron to run in a dual athlon board.

There are *almost* no bad BP6s. There are mostly bad caps.

No BP6s remaining

Thanx 2CPU!

"I will be the first to admit it, the Abit BP6 did more for the multiprocessor community than any other single product that I can remember. Who could fault cheap power? Anyone interested in some inexpensive power could run over to Pricewatch and order themselves up an Abit BP6 and a pair of Celeron 366's and overclock those bad-boys to 550mhz... EACH! Oh yes, I certainly remember the days of the first 1000mhz (combined) systems well. It made me feel inadequate with my piddly little dual PIII 450 system ;-)

Now I didn't actually get my first BP6 for more than a year after their release, but it was definitely an influence on this readership of this site. This was the first "inexpensive" SMP platform available to the normal hobbyist for his/her tinkering pleasure. Unfortunately Intel had other plans. With the release of the Celeron2 at 533mhz, Intel did the unthinkable... They actually disabled SMP compatibility! Ugh! Now anyone craving "The Power of Two" (tm) had to anty-up and get the real-deal PIII, not a very budget oriented proposition for a lot of people. Fast forward a year or two..."

We open the door to the real world of computing power!

There are some problems with the "new" Athlon T-Bred/Applebred package.

First, all bridges on the cpu are covered with a thin layer of organic material. Second, these cpus are multiplier locked since about week 43 in 2003. So you have to mod them to mobile XPs with the power now feature to change the multiplier via software, which does not work on all mainboards (ie not on nforce2-boards).

I was told that it is not possible to do this mod and the L5-mod that changes the Duron to a Athlon MP and run two of them in SMP mode. So you are stuck at the default multiplier and have to overclock via FSB.

Without overclocking, these Durons are far less attractive. I have one running in my gaming rig at 2304 Mhz rock stable (default 1600). And with full 256kb L2-cache.

That´s another point: If you want good SMP performance, you need a larger L2-cache than the Durons´ default 64kb. You can do that with the L2-bridges. Personally, I have only tried manipulating the bridges on one of the Durons in the new package. And while that covering layer could easily be removed with a scalpel. I didn´t succeed.

I have modded five Athlons and Durons via the bridge method before, and it worked on all of them, sometimes not at the first attempt, but it did. So it seems to be more difficult on the newer Durons, though I have word that it should still be possible to do the cache and the MP mod that way.

Shrug. Next week my Mobile Athlon 2600+'s arrive, and I'll be installing them into my MSI K7D Master-LR on top of Upgradeware XP-TMC multiplier control interposers. It should be interesting to see how well they overclock in dual processor mode. I'm given to understand you have to blow a bridge to make them show up as MP's, though:
L5 configuration (IIRC):
XP- |:::
MP- |::|
XP-M- |:||

Don't get a Tiger MP (S2460). It has been obsoleted by the Tiger MPX (S2466) and just about any 760MPX board like my K7D Master-LR.
