Can I use larger DIMM modules than 256Mb???

Post by tfasth »

According to this site you can: http://www.wh20.tu-dresden.de/~magu/pc.html

This site is in german but look at the specs for the BP6. 1024Mb of RAM.
That means that atleast one module is 512Mb in size. if that is true then it's very good :)

According to Abit the BP6 mobo will only do a total of 768Mb (3 x 256Mb)

Hmmm... has anyone a 512Mb (Double Density) DIMM module to test this out? Or has someone tried it???

I don't own a 512Mb piece of memory and don't wan't to buy one just for testing in the BP6 mobo either. But if it works then I will buy atleast one 512Mb module as it is slightly faster than a 2 x 256Mb cofig and gives me the posibility to expand to 1Gb or even better, 1.5Gb. :)

Unfortunately, no. The site author must be mistaken or has made a typo.

The 256MB per module limit is related to the i440BX chipset on the BP6 and cannot be overcome.

Are you sure it is the i440BX that is the problem? What if it's just the Celeron CPU's that makes it impossible to handle larger memory than 256Mb?

Absolutely 100% sure, yes. The BX will handle a maximum of 4x256MB modules, but the BP6 only has 3 slots. Some BX-based boards had 4 slots, and could accept 1024MB.

If you need any further convincing, check the Intel data sheet.

LOL, still don't want to believe you!

... ...but, maybe you are right, and Intel should atleast know what they are talking about!

It was just a happy thought! :)

Heheh! I'd love it to be true as well. ;)

This brings up an interesting question. I haven't looked at my bp6 mobo in a while. But would it be possible to swap the BX chipset with something newer that could support higher density memory? Part of my wondering with the memory limitations has always been if the limitation was hardware related in anyway(that is something in the DIMM slots now allowing higher density modules).

If you want newer chipsets, buy a newer mainboard.

yeah...it was something like that I was thinking of. 32x8 low density memory 512Mb.
For example this one http://www.pcwonderinc.com/51pc64sdraml.html
