Boot problems, board beeps like an ambulance, etc, etc

Post by Ceramicat »

I have a BP6 which has been acting up alot lately! First the video card was giving me problems so I swapped my faulty Voodoo card to a GForce 2 card and set the bios to AGP video. The Voodoo card does look a little "burnt" in the center indicating it may have been overheating. Soon after the video problem was solved, the boot up started to act sporatic. Sometimes it would boot, other times it would fan up but not boot until after several reset and power up attempts and other times it would just boot to an ambulance style alarm...hi-low continuous beeps. I can usually get it to boot after several tries. If it does boot and load, it also sometimes runs about 20 minutes before it will start the ambulance alarm thing all over again. I have checked over all conections and I do not believe it is my memory or any other cards. I have come to the conclusion it is probably a problem with the board. Now this board is 3 years old and it suits me fine when it works. I have been reading threads and I suspect a capacitor problem. Can anyone confirm my suspicions and advise whether it is worth getting the board fixed if it is the capacitors? I am not sure how to go about getting it fixed and it may not be worth the effort. I am looking for some seasoned advice from those of you with experience. Thanks!

If you think it may be the capacitors, you need to take a close look at them.

Examine them and see if the tops of the caps are bulging, or whether there is a coloured discharge around their connections.

After re-reading your post it looks as if you've already taken a look at the beep codes.

Anyhow, for future reference then :D

Thanks. I am sending the board out for repair. I am convinced the caps are the problem. I will post a reply once I see my results. Thanks for all of the help, Cathy

I just got a BP6. I have 2 Celeron 400's. The board boots with either cpu in either socket but is dead with both. Am I missing something? Please help the poor new guy. I am familiar with OC'ing and Abit- have be6-2 and VT6X4 just new to bp6. Please email me @ dedhedbri@hotmail.com.

I am a noviice/intermediate at this stuff but is it possibly a CMOS setting you need to change or a jumper on the board? Maybe you will get better help if you post a new thread and title it "Dual Processor..only one working". I am just guessing that might be the problem.

The board was repaired and works great. I sent it out and Gary fixed it within a day of receiving it and it was out in the next days mail. He did a great job and I am pleased. Would recommend anyone wanting capacitors repaired to use gary's service at
www.motherboardrepair.com
My original problems are all solved.
Thanks, Cathy

 I had an ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC experience with Gary Headlee

details here:
http://www.neilslade.com/headlee.html

in summary

I sent $50 cash and my video card
Gary never acknowledged any receipt of card or money for two weeks (this after posting 1-2 day turn around)
He never contacted me until finally the police got in touch with him asking where my money and card were (two weeks after sending)
I didn't get my card back until SIX WEEKS LATER
IT WAS STILL COMPLETELY BROKEN
HEADLEE KEPT MY $50

A third independent computer tech verified that no work had been done on the card the day after it arrived back.

Never again will I pay for a repair in advance. This guy is scum.

Carey Holzman, computer website www.careyholzman.com removed all links pointing to Headlee's page when I gave him details of the kind of treatment I got. He now points all links to my web page and sent me this note as well:

Unless he has a change of heart, this is how it will stay.
Thanks again for bringing this to my attention.
