Make sure your wireless router has security features that will restrict remote access. Not only administrative access but also controlling who gets an IP address through DHCP or not allowing access if the IP address has been restricted (No DHCP) on the router.

Don't even get me started on this one!
I live in wireless hell & am planning my escape to Gigabit Heaven soon.
Just got an 8-port gigabit switch for $165 Intel Gigabit sever NIC $59, (3) Intel Pro1000 workstation gigabit NICs $110

Rules & pointers for Wireless:
1) Absolutely only get H/W from the same manufacturer & similar vintage.
Interoperability between brands when you have a problem, rapidlly becomes a big Myth!

2) You have little control of how much interference comes at you from surroundings. This can take you down at random & drive you totally crazy. How many other 2.4GHz devices are already in your home or on their way? Is your microwave leaky? Nearby neighbors?

3) The H/W bundled driver & software utility, and Microsoft's built in wireles support S/W will have to fight it out to see who is really, actually going to be in control of your 802.11_ devices at any given time. This will lead to trouble sooner or later. You will struggle mightly to remember the 17 different places to go and tweak various setings when it just will not work.

This list goes on-and-on. Encryption? How do you get a 40-bit scheme device talking to a 64-bit scheme device? Who can you strangle?
I'll continue over the next few days.

Thank you for the comments. I will make sure to buy the same brand wireless devices and then take it from there. I’ll have to pay close attention to encryption; I live downtown and who knows how many people will want in.

Don't get me started on that one! You should see my basement :o Hundreds upon hundreds of wires...

The only things that will go wireless are my laptops.

I think I remember him complaining about headaches and stuff. Whenever he walked out of the wireless area the headaches would slowly go away.

Try this security test. I am curious(surely others are too) as to how easy it is to do this.
Whoever has a wireless setup and a laptop take it on the road, well actually just into populated areas, and see if you can reach the net via someones home wireless network that is poorly secured.

I read an article in MSN where a reporter seems to us this to send in her/his work when traveling.
There are *almost* no bad BP6s. There are mostly bad caps.

yippie
kuun is good.

for those of us that don't know how...how can one set that up. i usually get lost going any deeper then setting tcpip address on my peer-peer net at home. Win98 2 units, XP home 1unit, 2000pro on my BP6.

ummm,
also my "security test" post wasn't to get people doing bad stuff...i was leary of putting a wireless access point in the home of someone that relies on me for their computer equipment until i find out how risky it is.

Asus WL-500g handbook
make sure the router box and it's aerial are sited at least 20cm from any person.
I guess they say it for a reason.
and if you have a room full of wireless, headaches sound a fair possibility.

but then, so are bad backs (not me) eye strain (not me) lack of concentration (hmmm, nope)
maybe I'm genetically biased to the IT industry. (thanx mum)

My NetGear MR814 allows you to assign MAC addresses to specific IP's which pretty much eliminates anyone hacking in. Assuming of course you limit the number of address to the number of machines you actually have! DHCP is fine as long as you take these precautions. If you want total security I suggest you dig a really large hole in the back yard fill it about half way with concrete. then drop your PC in and finish filling the hole :woot:

HAHAHA

holodeck2,
you must be really good in order to hook yourself up to an antenna and sit outside someone's house and be able to violate their access point. most of us would need a pc. hey, are you related to Tim? Maybe its you giving him the headaches.
