hmm

you don't have any bad caps do you?

check your voltage swings

you may need the EC10 mod and new caps

Can you confirm that the problems don't occur under Linux of FreeBSD?

look for capacitors on the motherboard that look bulged at the top and/or leaking brown stuff around them

When you install WinXP, do you press F6 to add the HPT drivers?

If you don't use it you shouldn't need to...

On point 4, you can find out about the crash by looking in the event viewer.

Its not any thing to do with the power supply is it? I seem to remember when I had lots of drives and fans in my machine and a small supply it would do stuff like this?

Ahh but just noticed he says "Ok. The first thing I though was 'dodgy PSU', but I don't think this is so because NONE of the prementioned problems occur (well, 3 and 4) when using linux or fbsd. "

3pixelBob: Have you tried/could you try a different PSU just to eliminate it from being the problem?

Also give us a list of the hardware in that computer. Could be a bad driver bundled with XP.

What Bios revision are you using? Seem to remember early Bioses had problems with windows 2000/XP. Have you tried stripping everything out and starting with a floppy, HDD, one stick of memory and AGP? :umm:

ok i see no one has posted a reply about this
has it occured to you it may be a ram problem?
sometimes you will have a stick that seems fine but after it heats up it loses consistency and flakes out
try removing sticks
