Hi guys,

it's been awhile i know.. unfortunately work has kept me from being online much anymore.

well i have some bad news..

most of you know of my SCSI server which is powered by my BP6

well... it's dead

i've tried everything i can think of

swapped psu's, ram, tried new cpu,s 1 cpu in each socket, tried pulling al lcards out everything... it will not turn on... i don't know why.

it's only got 2 leaking caps. so that shouldn't be the problem.

i don't know what else to do.

i tihnk it's time to let her go.

but fear not, i will get another... one day

anyhow.. thought i'd let everyone know..

Why even bother

The 366 is just about irrelevant at this point for crunching SETI don't you think? I have a 366 running in my wife's old machine. Only reason it's still crunching is a) It might as well, it's running all the time anyway. b) I'm too lazy to build her a new one

c) She ain't bitched enough about how slow the damn thing is yet

As great as the BP6 was it's about time to move on. I've got 3 of them sitting on the floor in my basement. I can't see one good reason to bother even putting them in cases to crunch SETI. Everything I have running here is faster. Case in point I got an old Dell GX110 from a guy the other day with a PIII 733 in it for $30.00 bucks. All it needed was a harddrive. It does a WU in about half the time as the 366. And that is with the 366 OC'ed to 550

With the price of CPU's dropping constantly it's about time to give up this old stuff and move on

I can see if it's still running keeping this stuff alive but why would you go looking for a new one

For the money he is spending on that BP6 and the CPU's he could have bought a no name MB and an older P4 and had a real crunching machine that would be running rings around that BP6

Hehe. I laughed when I saw that. Do you think they put caps on the motherboard for decoration? If they are shot then they could definitely be the reason for your worries! They could also destroy other components on your motherboard if they are not working anymore. Change them and see what happens!!!!

Billl: There are other things that computers can be used for than crunching SETI. Also, the BP6 is still a great board to run Linux on despite its age! There are some things that you can use computers for where you don't need the latest and greatest. If you are willing to give up one of those BP6 motherboards you got lying around and ship it to Sweden then I would be very grateful

my playing up board has one bulged leaking cap
I got it working though.

my final analysis is the ram slots are playing up.
everytime it wouldn't post to the ram detection phase, if I pulled the ram chip into another slot, it posted ok.

kuun, do a careful paint brush and blow through over everything, dust between fine wires might be shorting something.....
clean the ram chips, the gold edges get gummy and dry, clean pencil eraser will do.
uhm, buy another one.

Well, if the capacitor is "only" leaking then I am pretty sure that you could get the board to post. However, if the damage is so bad that the cap is shorted? That means you probably got a high current going right through it, accessing components that the cap is supposed to protect. That could mean that a voltage regulator somewhere on the board gets too much current and dies. On the other hand, the cap could also fully loose its capacitance (spelling)? That means that you have effectively done the same thing as removing it from the motherboard. The result of that could be twofold:

1. A high current component doesn't get the flow of current they need to operate correctly.

2. You get voltage fluctuations because you have lost a component that has a main function of making voltages stable. Now everybody knows that this is a killer for computers.

I am still pretty sure that the reason for Kuun's board not working anymore is the caps or damage caused elsewhere by the damaged caps. What other reason do you have for it?

Btw, Dave Rave: An excellent idea is to check memory modules when a computer starts acting up. Sometimes, you get oxidation on the contacts on the memory modules and the best way to fix that is to take a regular erasor (harder the better) and carefully rub it on the contacts.

other reasons are a dirty environment.
the build up of dust in a high humidity area 'can' lead (hypothetically) to the dust being truned to mud, then it dries out and voila, short.

good news though

the bp6 is back up and running....

you'll never guess what the problem was....

the power cord at the plug.. was sliced in 2

how and why i've no clue.. i noticed it after i went to plug it abck up after dragging it out to clean it... when i pulled on the cord (it is a 6' cord that goes a whopping 1 maybe 2') it kinda came with me... i noticed and bout slapped myself

she is back up and running

and i will be buying a new one

on another note.. things are not going very good...

my car got broke into saturday night and they stole my speaker and amp

oh well

I feel your pain. That happen to me about a year ago. Bass speakers, amp, and deck. I cried.

Don't know which is worse, a dead BP6 or no beeps. Glad to hear your BP6 is still with us.

BP6's never die...
