Does Your BP6 Computer Have A Name?

Post by InactiveX »

I was thinking, seeing as I spend so much time with my BP6, maybe I should give him/her/it a name (don't laugh, we're all geeks here)?

Does your BP6 PC have a name? Tell us! :?:

well

i have named all mine after their purpose..

i had,
Nix: which was my experimental unix machine that later became my primary machine.. with win98se.
San: which was the unit that had 8 VERY small hdd's.. my first attempt to link/combine 2 computers via a network... i ran programs from one because i had win98se working on a 270 mb hdd... did'nt have room for alot of stuff..
Cedan (CDan): CD area network computer.. had 5 cdrom drives... all of which housed my most used cd's.. i played games and whatnot from cd's on that unit :P

then there's

BP: which is my lovely BP6 :P which also contains a lot of parts from Nix San and CDan

i referred to these computers by their assigned names :P

i think if i ever get more computers running on a network.. im gonna setup Borg designations...

my have been named rather stupidly as i was young when i got computers and so the names showed

Beast - my 3rd computer, was a 486 in a large tower case that was almost as tall as me at the time (seriously it was like 4 feet tall), therefore i called it the beast
Euclid - i saw Pi right about when i got this computer so it got that name
Nuclid (aka Newclid) - replaced Euclid, hence was the new euclid
Sexy - got a Compaq Pressario 3550 which was all black and nice and sleek and had an lcd flatscreen monitor (also black) and monsoon flat panel (or whatever they are officially called) speakers (also black), i thought it would make me really cool and popular with the girls (to bad there are no girl geeks)
Beast (V.2) - resurrected the beast moniker as well i got a large computer again so i called it the beast
Dualie - my bp6 system gotten sometime last year (around 8 months ago i guess), for very good reason its my main computer right now (though yes all teh others ones are still functional)

also there are older computers i have from before these, however i didnt really name them, i havea 286, an 8088 (yes thats right not an 8086, but an 8088), a few laptops (one is like a sewing machine), and commadore, and a trs-80 (though thats actully in my dads office for nostolgic purposes)

I name mine for network purpouses, and I tend to pick a random theme, the trouble is my brother wanted to choose his own name (siblings eh?) so I now have a hybrid of systems, which I'm thinking of merging, if I can be bothered...

Main Machine: Dirtyhabit
Server: BP6
(how original) used to be called Blutack when it was a P3 held together with Blutack. But I dont currently have a good name for the BP6, but ill think about it.

Other than that the main one used to be called Deviant then before that it was called Aftershock.
(I change the name of my main machine like once every few years as i get bored with it.)

i was imaginative, and called mine
sq-2
sq-3
sq-4
sq-5
sq-6
sq-7

it's easy to remember where they are and what they are
and when I moved, I just laid em all back out in a row

now, sq-5 just got retired and has been replaced with the same drive but a new name
sq-24b
soon to be joined by
sq-24c and
sq-24dx
being a
B 533 chip
C 800 chip
dual xeon
was going to see if I can get a 2.4A 400 chip
then also a 2.4 celeron is easy to get
then maybe a dual xeon with 400fsb instead of the 533
and maybe a 2400+ XP and if I'm really masochistic a dual 2400+ MP

see also "for sale" - decommissioning my bp6's (3 rpd)
the sq-24b already does 8 rpd
expecting 32?? rpd from the dual xeon ;-)
bp6's 3 x dual @ 533
. . . . 1 x dual @ 466
. . . . 1 sngl @ 400
[( 2 x dual xeon 2.4ghz )]
[( 2 x dual xeon 2.66ghz )]
[( 1 x 2.4C ghz )]
[( 1 x 2.4B ghz )]
[( 1 x dual AMD 1800MP )]
[( 1 x P4 1600 )]
[( 1 x 500 ppga )]

I'm a *nix guy. All *nix machines get names. It's a long standing tradition from the early days of networking.

My BP6 (down at the moment), is named rigel.

My 486 laptop is proxima.

My PII 350 at work is named neptune

I use astronomical names for my computers (Rigel is a star in the Orion constellation, Proxima Centauri is the closest star to the sun, and y'all better know where I got Neptune). My university uses famous dead poets (Dante, Homer, Vergil and so forth).

I am a *nix person as well and of course computers should be named :)

Being Icelandic, I use various names from Norse mythology. My main box shares my middle name, Thor and my secondary box (BP6) is called Loki. My wife's box is Sif (naturally), my firewall and router is Valhalla. My webserver goes by the name of Sleipnir.
