Looks like MAC filtering is the best way to secure your wireless. IPCop will only allow "devices" access to the Internet based on MAC address.

best way is to
connect your notebook or other devices to your wireless.
then turn the wireless to not broadcast the SID
so it's invisible.

MAC filters only attempts to control access to your network however without encryption someone can still listen in to network traffic.

Anything is better than nothing. Wireless security will always lag behind wired security.

I use 128bit WEP, I found it was easier to put a 40 Hex character string in then connect to my wireless AP from another system to add the MAC of a new card I wanted to be able to access from. Am I worried someone will crack my WEP key... not really why waste their time when some joker a few houses down has a completely open network?

My AP is using 64-bit WEP.

That's all I use too. But then I have nothing on my machines to be worth hacking into in the first place. So they won't get much for their efforts.

personally.. i've not ventured to wireless networking for my own personal network..

but i have helped a few others setup theirs.. and MAc filtering seems to be a good solid way to prevent unwanted visitors from accessing the network..

at least without adding additional security and WEP..

seriously though.. who's gonna drive up and down the road looking for a network to "hack" when they can find open unsecure networks everywhere?
