So, has anyone done this before? I have fans on my heatsinks, but they're not spinning right now and they generally won't in the course of an average day. My system temps are 30C on each CPU and 33 on the motherboard. Under load they go up about 3-5 degrees. However, the system is located in my lau...

Vector Linux, Ubuntu, and VidaLinux. just based on the name, am mighty partial to Ubuntu. Ubuntu is very good and has lots of community backing too. Not only do they have their own forums which are really good, Ubuntu basically is Debian, which is one of the oldest and best-supported distros in exi...

Slackware is also billed as being one of the fastest distro's. Debian, is also peppy and that is what I run on my two BP6's. I don't think either neat Slack or Debian is good for a newbie. If you want Slackware, try Vector Linux, if you want Debian, try Ubuntu, if you want Gentoo, try VidaLinux. Th...

Until they become unstable. :) Seriously though, when my system was sitting next to a heat vent the CPUs got up to 45C under load and there wasn't any problem. I've heard of CPUs having shorter lives due to heat but I think that's a crock. In my experience, within the realistic useable life of the e...

I tried Xandros on my BP6 and I didn't like it. It's quite bloated and slow, kinda like Mandrake. With Xandros and KDE it's probably going to be unsatisfying compared to Windows, you'll either need a faster distro or a different window manager. On slow systems like ours, I'd recommend you go with a ...

How do you set the AGP aperture to 0? It's in the BIOS. I think that it's an option in Advanced Chipset Features but I'm not 100% sure - have a look around. It's called "AGP aperture size" and you want it set to 0 or, if you can't, to a number very close to 0, which will do practically the same thi...

First, NVidia cards are, as a rule, tolerant of an overclocked AGP bus. You shouldn't have any difficulty at 1:1. Secondly, the AGP bus is used for things like loading very large textures that won't fit into the main memory of the graphics card, allowing the GPU to use system memory for overflow. Ho...

That program sounds ideal. As it happens, I have an HP Vectra PII-233. It used to be my 8-year-old son's, but since he got a Gamecube for his birthday he completely lost interest in it (go figure), so right now it's just a testbed machine. But I could throw in an extra NIC and install DamnSmall and ...

It would connect to their server just fine, but most days report that there was nothing new to get. Antivir does use the network connection even when there was no other traffic, at least according to my firewall. AVG, on the other hand, did seem to have something new at least daily. I believe you ab...

1. Have you also experienced the strange problem with BIOS reporting two CPU's while the OS only sees one? No - only where the OS doesn't support SMP. I've gotten SMP in WinNT, 2K, XP, BeOS, and Linux. Because the problem went away when you bumped the voltage up, I suspect your CPUs are not equal. ...

I used to use a program called AntiVir. However, I became concerned that days and even weeks would go by when there were no updates available. I switched to AVG quite recently because they updated their definitions more often. I suppose no system is foolproof. I didn't mean to imply you were infecte...

I'm 90% certain it's not a virus. Firstly, I've repeatedly re-installed and the problem recurs. Secondly, I run a very clean system - I always installed the latest security updates, ran a good virus scanner (AVG) with definitions updated daily, and anti-spyware programs (Seek and Destroy, Ad-Aware, ...

OK, here is a further update. I installed Linux a while ago. My system uptime is now 5 days, 11 hours and counting. Before that reboot I was up for over 2 days. What are you doing that makes speed such an issue you're considering SCSI? For desktop use, SCSI is a waste. Heck, anything faster than ATA66 is a waste - most ATA drives can't top 60MB/sec, especially sustained, which means that SATA, ATA133 and SCSI are really suitable for multiple-drive arrays. A...

Sounds like it might be a driver hangup. How long did you leave it before you decided it was out to lunch and gave up? You can try getting into safe mode. You can also try booting from the XP CD-ROM and repairing the installation, but I'd try the safe mode first. It may be that you'll need to update...
