S4 The article you sent a link for is very interesting, somewhat confusing too! I can't remember which Highpoint Bios is on the BP6 in question, (runs without a video card so will have to check another day). I guess I really ought to look towards backing some of the data up, before it all screws up!...

Large drives

Hi S4.... I have a third party disc controller around which I could use, certainly it would be a bit faster if nothing else, going from a 100Mbit network interface to a 1000Mbit makes barely any difference, the poor old Highpoint seems to be the bottleneck. The following is a cut and paste of the lo...

Large Drives

Hi, I will see how full the drives are, to be honest I thought there was a BIOS limitation too! These drives are far from empty so I need to check, just looked at the shares via the Windows PC and it seems one of the 250s has only 40Gb left at the moment, however I did move a lot of stuff across a f...

BP6 capacitors

Hi, good to see someone is still playing BP6s! I got the capacitors from Maplin Electronics here in the UK, I have not heard of the free capacitors offer. Some pictures of my motherboard are on my crap website www.lisney.org.uk A few people were a bit scathing, suggesting that the board would not ru...

I guess it means watching Ebay for a while, a few friends have BP6s but are still using them. All of them except one have needed capacitor changes, fwiw it seems to massively help stability even replacing them before they have failed. My VP6 has been my main pc for quite a few years now, it used to ...

I have a webserver on a BP6, running at 75Mhz FSB with a pair of 466s, OpenBsd... Apache webserver and Samba, also runs a dns and a client for dyndns. Boot from a smallish drive and data on a pair of 250Gb drives on the highpoint, found my Highpoint controller is ok with slight overclock does not li...

Shame the electrolytic capacitors will not work at that temperature.... even ones rated for very low temperature suffer from high ESR when cold.

A nice thought though......

Briefly regarding the capacitors, my sad old web page, still on www.lisney.org.uk still has pics of one of my BP6s with new caps, also did a few other BP6s and my VP6.

Can't believe in 2006 I am still contemplating P3s on a BP6!

My original BP6 which uses a pair of 466s seems to overclock better with old age, once I changed the capacitors the machine reached a level of stability way above what it did before. Some RF devices are known to improve a little with use, I suspect that whatever processes are changing the structure ...

I have used a D-Link 802.11G card and it installed and ran happily under XP PRO with no wierd problems, I wonder if my 75Mhz bus speed is a bit more conservative than other people are running? Incidentally one of my BP6s is now semi-retired and running OpenBsd as a web server, seems happy with a con...

Hi, good point regarding the heatsinks, sorry the URL I posted some years ago has changed, the BP6 stuff is now at www.lisney.org.uk The BP6 is still running and still pleased with it, it has been joined by another overclocked BP running Openbsd with Apache, Samba and a DNS on it. The power supply n...

My 466s once posted at 644Mhz... FSB @ 92Mhz (sadly that is as far as they got) You did well to get 500s as far as that, a tad over 600Mhz... mine have never ever got into the OS at that clock, I have run a sustained 574Mhz but that is definitely borderline with various buses running too far out of ...

Hi, changing the caps is not overly easy, a bit fiddly though, personally I am a bit wary about running a drill through the holes as you may end up drilling out the plated through holes on the board which is multi-layered. A friend and I have done half a dozen or so BP6s and a couple of VP6s. (And a...

Hi, not sure how old the last post in this thread was, I think you may get 500s to a 72Mhz fsb if you can keep the temperatures down. For what it is worth I have found the Highpoint controllers in mine are unreliable with some drivers and BIOS versions at standard clock speed, at 75Mhz they are reli...

Hi, since I have given up pushing my BP6s to the edge (I run them at a leisurely 525Mhz these days) I have considered doing away with the nasty CPU fans, over here in the UK Maplin stocks little tubes with flanges intended for "ports" on loudspeaker enclosures, I may attach a pair to the side of the...

Hi, I overclocked my work laptop using Softfsb, to be honest I would not recommend it, some laptops run apparently on the ragged edge to start with, I ran Softfsb from a floppy just in case the laptop fried so it would not leave incriminating evidence! Still running!

Hi, just an update to say my BP6 and VP6 with mods are still running, the VP6 still runs 24/7 but the BP6 has sprouted a dualhead video card and runs ham radio stuff most of the time, also provides an ethernet port to run my Mac which has no 802.11g of it's own. Hi, downloaded SP2 from Microsoft (the network install 266Mb version), have used it on a pair of Athlon machines and my VP6. No follow-ups for a while... I have not got any pics of my VP6 with replacement caps to hand but this is the BP6 board, still running strong after many years... http://www.lisney.org.uk no longer watercooled or peltiered but still overclocks reasonably.
