doncaruana, that's pretty much what i did. put the heat sink in a vice, bottom up, then used a hack saw to cut in, up to and just into the fins, then rearranged the heatsink so the side faced up, and cut in, through the fins, to the previous cut. left a nice notch along that corner. then, just blew ...

next step here: on bootup, bios intermittently hangs on "Verifying DMI pool data... " did some searching in the archives on DMI and see this may be nasty. hoping it isn't, of course. here's the thing: on a cold boot, most of the time it gets through this oK, and although it happens almost too quickl...

xos install hangs: debug info posted here

below is a copy of the nitty-gritty of a post sent to xandros tech support: the full text of the "Initializing kernel... " process is given below. the last line of text before the hang, in the Custom or Rescue options, reads: "checking if image is initramfs...it isn't (no cpio magic); looks like an ...

have not run across that one before, but
sure enough,
hold the button down for about 3 - 4 seconds, and
turns right off.

thanks,

1st Time Booting BP6: damn, sumpin's wrong!

from what i read on another thread, this may be a no - no. just took out a SOYO slocket MoBo, on which WIN95 was running. plan to install clean HDs on this bp6 for a linux/xandros clean install, but first thought is to check out the newly installed BP6, using the old HD with the WIN95 install. am do...

this fan thread has me asking:

on the bx chipset,
should the 486 fan blow into the bx, or
away from the chip.

mine blows into it, and
can't be turned over.
s'pose the wires could be clipped and switched and
soldered and heatshrunk.

hey guys, hugoc & purrkur, thanks for all the clues here. sounds like i can cut back on the eye candy, until performance is acceptable, thus finding my own balance. intially staying with the tried and true older drivers & file systems. it helps so much knowing what to expect from ones like ya'll, wh...

50 mm fans

bill, the fans are NOT 40mm, actually they are 50 mm. i unintentionally sent a confusing email about the sized. the matched 50mm fans: * EVERCOOL * ball bearing * 50 mm (measure between mounting screws, along the edges) * 3-wire * "Low noise." * "Long life time." * 0.17 A * 2.04 W * Model: EC6020H12...

Fan size

thanks purrkur, i apologize for sending a confusing message. the fans measure 50 mm between the screws (70 mm diagonally). i was trying to say the height of the heat sink is about 39 mm. the fan then screws on top of that, of course. i took the shop attendants word for it that this matched pair of w...

3-wire fans

purrkur, found the cpu fans needed. local computer shop had a box full of used fans. sorted them into matching units. asked assistant which matched set worked best on 370s. paid $10 for a pair of StarTech ball bearing units with 39mm tall heat sinks, and should be good to go. thanks again, ~~~^^^mer...

thanks purrkur :) just what i needed to know. so i read from your reply, the v0.40 and the v0.41 are without significant differences - at least nothing i need to be concerned with. the new psu is enroute. bx is pasted and fanned. Direction for 3-wire cpu coolers.

most of the pieces are in place for my first bp6. it happens to be a v0.41. 1) what is the significance of the v0.41? have matched 2x 466s and 2x366s will start with the 466s @ 466, then hope to go to the 366s @ 550 2) what brand and model number 3-wire fans are ya'll using on these cpus? the 466s c...

switch in the kernel

that explains how an insider could, without too much trouble, offer a modified distro of xandros that supports smp, even though, out of the box, it will only use 1 cpu. seems like xandros would be offered out of the box with a question in the install asking: "does your computer have 2 cpus? Yes No."...

cooling the BX chipset - 3-wire fan???

i read somewhere, probably here at bp6, if a 3-wire 486 fan (i think this includes a ground wire) is used and plugged into 'fan3' on the bp6 mobo, then the fan's rpms can be monitored via software. 1) any comments or thoughts? i am just getting parts together to build my bp6, so i don't actually kno...

Xandros Deluxe 3.0 ($89) or Xandros 2.01 OCE ($2.98)

:?:
eBay has the OCE version for $2.98, including shipping.

this will be my first exposure to linux of any kind, but
don't anticipate requiring the tech support that comes with Deluxe 3.0.

are there other pros for shelling out the $89 Deluxe 3.0, other than support?

thx, ~~~^^^larry^^^~~~
